More about the exhibition
This set of plates, each bearing a date and a place name, originally constituted 3 notebooks. It is a real walk in the footsteps of the draftsman that we can start from Coutançais to Avranchin through the surroundings of Granville, following the itineraries of an artist working on the motif.
It is from two drawings signed J. Le Dieu and from the cover page of two notebooks that the investigation conducted by the Archives départementales de la Manche has allowed us to identify the artist: Joseph Le Dieu (1815-1880), born and deceased in Avranches, where he practiced as a lawyer, while participating in the intellectual and artistic life of the city.
From one notebook to the other, thirty years separate the two series of drawings. While the artist acquired a perfect mastery of pencil technique between the two periods, particularly in the rendering of vegetation and foliage, his walks have remained the same.
